Summer Camp Shenanigans

Sierra Daugherty

Summer has arrived in Memphis, and that means summer camp is in full swing at Arrow Creative. You can beat the heat and inspire your mini maker's creative spirit by enrolling your 3rd - 12th grade camper in one of the many summer sessions we have to offer. From ceramics to fashion design, Arrow summer camp has something for every young creator.

Our camps offer a variety of creative classes in several mediums. Of course campers are offered traditional art courses such as Painting and Drawing and Intro to Ceramics, both of which are taught by phenomenal instructors. In fact, our Ceramics instructor, Sarah Stobbe, just had an original piece selected for ASC’s 2023 Irene Rosenzweig Exhibition! However, Campers can also choose to experience creative courses that may otherwise be hard to come by. For example, this summer Mini Makers have had access to almost weekly Digital Illustration classes taught by Shane McDermott, a cartoonist, character designer, illustrator, and comics professor who taught comics, digital painting, and illustration at Memphis College of Art for 12 years. Shane most recently worked as a background artist for the Baby Shark movie at Nickelodeon. Students who choose to take Digital Illustration at Arrow work alongside a professional, accomplished digital illustrator! Other digital class options include Animation and Digital Photography. For campers who prefer more hands on materials and less screen time, we also offer a variety of fun, interesting classes. Mini Makers can take camps in wearable art (think handmade t-shirts, keychains, and friendship bracelets) fashion design, sewing, book illustration, and more.

Aside from the wide range of camps we offer, Arrow gives Mini Makers another valuable experience: seeing creative entrepreneurs at work. Here at Arrow, we rent out 14 studio spaces to local artists. While students are at camp, they can see various creatives hard at work in their studios practicing their craft and selling items directly out of their studios! We also offer a retail marketplace made up of over 80 local artists. Students are able to walk through the marketplace every day and view other creatives' work. Being surrounded by creative entrepreneurs and their work shows our Mini Makers that there are opportunities for them to pursue their craft and become successful entrepreneurs as well!

If you haven’t been to an Arrow summer camp yet, you’re in luck. We do still have a few spots left for our 2023 sessions, but hurry, they are filling up fast! If you can’t get to summer camp this year, fear not. Arrow offers kid’s community classes throughout our regular programming year. Keep an eye on our social media and website for updates as classes become available. You may also want to try your hand at some crafts to inspire the creative spirit in your Mini Maker right there at home. Check out the list below for a few fun, creative activities you can do without leaving the house!
